Inland Waterway Navigation System
The Port of Muskogee is located on the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System. The waterway is well suited for shipping bulk materials and large fabricated items. Considering the variety of barges available and the increasing use of containerization, almost any product or commodity is suitable for transportation on the waterways. All of the major commodities shipped on the waterway, construction materials, petroleum, coal, grains and other agriculture products, steel products, chemicals and minerals are a part of the continued growth in river traffic. As more shippers understand the economics of water transportation, new commodities are moved along the Arkansas River System. One barge (1,400 tons) is equal to 14 jumbo railcar hoppers or 56 semi trucks. Maximum tow size: 8 jumbo barges and one tow boat for single to locking. Average jumbo barge size: 35 feet wide by 195 feet long.
