More Than 75% of Businesses Have Lost Revenues Due to COVID-19

This week, the Muskogee City-County Port Authority and the Greater Muskogee Area Chamber of Commerce announced the creation of a new task force intended to address how the community moves from disaster response to economic recovery.

The Muskogee Forward Economic Recovery Task Force is asking local businesses participate in a survey to provide data that will be used to understand the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the local economy.

The link to the survey can be found on their website at www.MuskogeeForward.com.

“We want to hear from our business community,” said Marie Synar, director of industrial development for the Muskogee City-County Port Authority.  “Although well-intentioned, we recognize there have been shortcomings with the Federal and State assistance programs.  We want to understand what barriers exist that hinder our companies from returning to pre-pandemic revenues, and how the community can best support them through this crisis.”

Businesses are asked to submit their responses to the survey by midnight on Wednesday, so the Task Force can begin using the information as they consider ways to help the community recover.

The Task Force announced on Friday that will also be hosting a series of virtual roundtable discussions, called “Let’s Talk”, in effort to facilitate two-way communication with business owners.  The roundtable discussions will be held using the Zoom meeting platform in order to maximize participation, while adhering to safe social distancing guidelines.  The first round of discussions will be held on Monday, May 18th and Tuesday, May 19th, beginning at 9:00am.  Participants are required to register for the events.  For a full schedule of meetings or to register, visit www.MuskogeeForward.com.  Discussions will be tailored to four separate industry groups, along with sessions focused on workforce employment, training and education and economic resources.

“We hope businesses take advantage of this opportunity to express their concerns and needs with us”, said Angela Wilson, president and CEO of the Greater Muskogee Area Chamber of Commerce.  “The Let’s Talk discussions will also allow us an opportunity for us to share some of the data we’ve received through our business survey.”

Preliminary findings of the Muskogee Forward business survey reflect that 78.65% of Muskogee businesses have experienced a decline in revenues, as a result of the pandemic.
